This brings me back to the previously mentioned, super secure password: “ ZK}8xR%YtrvVAk4nuad#Y9g}X.” This password will likely be among the last that is cracked, but it would be very difficult to remember it.

Ideally your password is strong enough so, by the time you learn of a hack, the chances of it being cracked are slim. This can take weeks or months, during which you have no idea that hackers are trying to crack your password! In the event of a data breach, the company must first discover the hack, investigate it, and report it. Before that happens, you want to make sure there is enough time to react and change your password. It’s safe to assume that once a company has been hacked and your account details are stolen, your password will be exposed at some point. If your password is “ Password1,” it will be cracked in under a second, but if your password is “ ZK}8xR%YtrvVAk4nuad#Y9g}X,” it can take so much time it’s not worth the effort for those attempting to crack it. Cracking password hashes takes time, but a large percentage of passwords can be cracked very quickly as they are commonly used.

Hashed data can be cracked by someone with enough processing power and motivation, though, which is why you often see stolen data from a hack surface weeks or months later. Hashing creates a digital fingerprint that represents your password.Salting adds random bits to your password. If proper procedures are followed, your account details including credit card info and password should be “hashed” and “salted” using a strong cryptographic cipher. Here’s what those terms mean: Just in the past year, companies and services such as Twitter, IKEA, T-Mobile, and Twitch were hacked. Wikipedia has a list of data breaches, listing the largest hacks. You don’t hear about these hacks often, except when it’s a big company or a popular website. These leaks often contain user names and passwords, and can include other data, such as credit card numbers or personal information.

Just throwing this out there, been using it almost a year now.How To + Software & Apps How to Choose the Right Password Manager for YouĬompanies and websites are hacked all the time, and data they hold about users can be leaked. It has a companion iOS app which can use FaceID to unlock and integrates with Safari there nicely. But it's approximately a 50% cheaper yearly subscription. It can also fill the fields from the menubar like 1PW style. You can also have it auto log you in upon clicking. It's a little bit 1PW and a little bit Dashlane, in the sense that it doesn't auto-populate your credentials but a clickable popup by the input fields does. I tried basically all the ones mentioned in this thread without finding a solution that pleased me enough.

LastPass could with some manual editing, but again, I just found their system "clunky". So before my subscription ended with 1PW, I went on a hunt for which one's would handle these kind of logins.

Now to 1PW's credit, it handles these fine but Dashlane was a no-go. I have some banking sites that, in addition to a user/password field, have a dropdown menu for which branch you are with. But sadly, the lack of being able to manually edit/add fields to complicated logins was a deal breaker for me. Loved the fact that their extension auto-populated your credentials in the login input boxes on websites, or would even auto log you in, which is how 1PW should have functioned IMHO. I felt their pricing model was too high for such poor integration. I was a user of 1PW for a few years, but the fact they seemed to be able to integrate it better in browsers other than Safari was annoying and made the experience seem very clunky.
